Hadiths about The Importance of Learning the Quran

The best among you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it

The timeless wisdom of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, echoes through generations with the profound statement, ‘The best among you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.’ This Hadith serves as a guiding light, inspiring Muslims to embrace the noble journey of acquiring knowledge, imparting it, and illuminating hearts with the divine teachings of the Qur’an.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5027

In a touching instance of the Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) wisdom and compassion, a woman approached him, expressing her desire to dedicate herself to Allah and His Apostle. The Prophet’s response, “I am not in need of women,” highlighted his commitment to his spiritual role. However, a man present showed interest in marrying the woman.

The Prophet’s guidance for this potential union showcased his consideration for the less privileged. He advised the man to provide even a simple garment or token, and when the man expressed his inability, the Prophet’s response demonstrated the value he placed on Quranic knowledge. By linking the marriage to the man’s familiarity with certain Quranic verses, the Prophet emphasized the significance of Quranic understanding and its role in shaping relationships.

A lady came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and declared that she had decided to offer herself to Allah and His Apostle. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “I am not in need of women.” A man said (to the Prophet) “Please marry her to me.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said (to him)

“Give her a garment.” The man said, “I cannot afford it.” The Prophet said, “Give her anything, even if it were an iron ring.” The man apologized again. The Prophet then asked him, “What do you know by heart of the Qur’an?” He replied, “I know such-andsuch portion of the Qur’an (by heart).” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Then I marry her to you for that much of the Qur’an which you know by heart.”

“The Excellence of Reciting the Qur’an” highlights the profound significance of engaging with the holy Quran in Islam. Through the divine verses, Muslims find spiritual solace, guidance, and immense rewards. This introduction invites readers to explore the remarkable benefits and blessings that come from reciting and reflecting upon the words of Allah.

Abu Umamah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, “Read the Qur’an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection.”

[Muslim]

A profound statement from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) resonates with the significance of living by the teachings of the Quran. He foretells that on the Day of Resurrection, the Quran itself, along with its adherents who embodied its principles, will emerge. Surat Al-Baqarah and Surat Al-‘Imran will take the lead, advocating for those who embraced their wisdom and guidance in their lives.

This Hadith underscores the deep connection between the Quranic message and its application, suggesting that these chapters will serve as testimonials for individuals who sincerely lived by their precepts. The narrative resonates with the idea that the Quran becomes not just a written text, but a living guide that intercedes for its followers in the hereafter.

An-Nawwas bin Sam’an (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, “The Qur’an and its people who applied it, will be brought on the Day of Resurrection preceded with Surat Al-Baqarah and Surat Al-‘Imran arguing on behalf of those who applied them.”

[Muslim].

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) imparts a message of encouragement and equity concerning the recitation of the Quran. He elucidates that a person skilled in the art of reciting the Quran will share a spiritual fellowship with the exalted and obedient angels who record deeds.

Simultaneously, the Prophet acknowledges the efforts of those who struggle to recite the Quran fluently, reassuring them that their dedication carries a double reward. This Hadith underscores the inherent value of sincere engagement with the Quran, regardless of one’s recitation proficiency. It emphasizes the inclusivity of divine rewards and the significance of striving to recite the Quran to the best of one’s ability.

‘Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an will be with the honorable and obedient scribes (angels) and he who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have two rewards.”

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In a profound revelation, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) delivers an empowering message of equality and encouragement with regard to engaging with the Quran. He unveils a sublime truth, indicating that those adept in the art of Quranic recitation will enjoy a spiritual companionship with the celestial and dutiful scribes—angelic recorders of deeds.

This sacred Hadith resonates with the essence of devotion and underscores the intrinsic worth of sincere interaction with the Quran. It highlights the universality of divine recompense, underscoring the paramount importance of earnestly striving to recite the Quran to the best of one’s individual ability.

Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The believer who recites the Qur’an is like a citron whose fragrance is sweet and whose taste is delicious. A believer who does not recite the Qur’an is like a date-fruit which has no fragrance but has a sweet taste. The hypocrite who recites the Qur’an is like basil whose fragrance is so sweet, but its taste is bitter. The hypocrite who does not recite the Qur’an is like a colocynth which has no fragrance and its taste is bitter.”

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

With succinct yet profound words, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) conveys a striking truth about the Quran’s influence. He states that Allah bestows elevation upon certain individuals through their connection with the Quran, while others may experience humility.

This concise Hadith encapsulates the transformative potency of the Quran, illustrating how it can shape one’s spiritual journey and position in the eyes of Allah. The Prophet’s words serve as a reminder of the Quran’s dynamic impact on human lives, fostering either elevation or humility based on one’s engagement with its teachings.

‘Umar bin Al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Verily, Allah elevates some people with this Qur’an and abases others.”

[Muslim].

A captivating episode unfolds as a man recites Surat Al-Kahf while accompanied by a horse, fastened with two tethers. As the verses flow from his lips, an ethereal cloud casts its shadow, gradually drawing near. Simultaneously, the horse responds with fervent trampling. Eager to fathom this remarkable occurrence, the man shares the story with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) the next day.

The Prophet’s response encapsulates the profound essence of the incident, explaining that the descending cloud symbolizes tranquility bestowed upon the reciter as a direct outcome of engaging with the Quran. This vivid Hadith resonates with the harmonious connection between the divine word and the natural world, underscoring the tangible blessings that accompany the recitation of the Quran.

Al-Bara’ bin ‘Azib (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:

A man was reciting Surat Al-Kahf, and a horse was tied with two ropes beside him. As he was reciting, a cloud overshadowed him, and as it began to come nearer and nearer, the horse began to trample voilently. The man came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in the morning and mentioned the incident to him. He (ﷺ) said, “That was tranquillity which descended as a result of the recitation of the Qur’an.”
